Reading Together Movement 2020: Caring through Reading

April 23rd is UNESCO’s World Book and Copyright Day, and Reading Panda is launching our annual Reading Together Movement on this day for the third year to promote reading with children!

This year is a little bit special, as most of us are still homebound due to the Movement Control Order to help curb Covid-19.  However, it is through these times of existential crisis that help us see the importance of quality human connections, through helping each other in the society and spending quality time with our loved ones at home.

For those of us with children, reading together has become ever so important, as it allows our minds to travel when we must stay where we are, continue to satisfy our little one’s curious minds and reinforce ties between people.

What makes this year even more special, is that Kuala Lumpur has been selected as the World Book Capital (KLWBC) by UNESCO with various initiatives lined up to encourage the nation to read more from 23rd April 2020 for one year!

To celebrate this great cause, we are aligning our theme this year to be same as KLWMC’s slogan ‘Caring through Reading’ which we think is very timely.  Quoting KLWBC:

A city that reads is a city that cares. In choosing our slogan KL BACA: Caring through Reading, we believe that the best way for people to appreciate and care for other people and for them to care for the environment is to get the people to read. Books empower our soul and make us better human beings. A caring society sustains harmony and protects the environment for future generations.

To recycle, or not to recycle, that is the question

Not long ago, I worked with Axel on a school poster about the things we could do to help combat climate change, and we used the ‘outdated’ 3Rs slogan on the poster. This prompted me to re-think about recycling – why do we need to do it (apart from being told to) and what does this latest buzzword ‘sustainability’ mean?
